Encephalitis is a syndrome characterized by altered mental status and various combinations of acute fever, seizures, neurologic deficits, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis, and neuroimaging and electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities.1 The syndrome has many causes; the most commonly
identified causes are neurotropic viruses. The general principles of diagnosis and
treatment of viral encephalitis are presented in this review.
